UMass graduate students from the School of Public Policy and the Data Analytics and Computational Social Science program visited Washington, D.C. at the start of the spring '24 semester for the annual SBS career development field trip. Students met with alumni and networked with policy and data professionals, learning first-hand about the value of a degree in their respective programs.
"This trip served as a catalyst for personal and professional growth," said student Andjella Jean-Jaques. "We were able to interact with professionals who utilize data-driven approaches to make informed decisions…and connect with alumni actively shaping policies and making profound differences nationally and worldwide."
Alumni from federal agencies such as FEMA, FERC, EPA, Homeland Security, and the Library of Congress; international agencies RTI and Pact; and non-profits such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Homeless Research Institute all contributed valuable insights and networking potential for students. The trip resulted in many potential mentorships, internships, and career opportunities.
"As an international student, the DC trip opened my eyes to the intricate workings of the US job market, showing me the diverse career paths and opportunities available from the heart of America's political and economic landscape," said student Ravina Banze. "The trip inspired me to envision a future where I, too, can play a role in shaping our society."
