Bashir Awarded 2024 Emerging Scholar Award

September 19, 2024 Awards & Honors

Content

Shahnaz Bashir, PhD candidate in communication, has been awarded the 2024 Emerging Scholar Award at October's International Conference on The Image. The award recognizes outstanding graduate students with research interests aligned with the conference theme of "Images and Imaginaries of Artificial Intelligence." Emerging Scholars perform a critical role at the conference by chairing the parallel sessions, providing technical assistance, and presenting their work.

Bashir's research focuses on visual communication and particularly on disinformation and the ontological implications of deepfakes. He has over thirteen years of teaching experience and is an accomplished writer, with several awards and publications to his name, including two books of literary fiction, "The Half Mother" and "Scattered Souls." His innovative approach to teaching and research includes developing "Pixelated Lies: Decoding Digital Deceit," an undergraduate course that addresses the challenges posed by deepfake imagery and visual disinformation.
