Amanda Walker Johnson, anthropology, has received the 2023 UMass ADVANCE Faculty Peer Award for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. This award recognizes her outstanding leadership and special contributions in developing infrastructure in her department that led to effective group mentoring approaches to anti-racist theory and practice. She is one of nine faculty members from UMass to receive the award.

The ADVANCE Faculty Peer Award recognizes the critically important work faculty members perform in mentoring and supporting their colleagues' professional development and success. The winners were selected from a competitive pool of nominees and were honored by Provost Tricia Serio during the ADVANCE Distinguished Lecture on March 28th.

"We congratulate this year's ADVANCE faculty mentor award winners for the important work they do as mentors and sponsors of their colleagues," said Laurel Smith-Doerr, professor of sociology and ADVANCE PI. "Peer mentoring is an important component of faculty equity. It helps build inclusive communities and makes UMass faculty feel valued and included."
