Sonya Atalay, Provost Professor of Anthropology and the inaugural director of the newly-founded Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges (CBIKS), was the keynote speaker of the 2024 Daffodil Lecture on Sustainability and the Environment. Sponsored by the Commonwealth Honors College and Phi Kappa Phi, the lecture reflects UMass Amherst's leadership in green research and sustainability.

Atalay discussed the groundbreaking nature of the new Center and interweaving Indigenous studies and knowledge with Western science. "CBIKS' vision looks forward to 2033; after a decade of CBIKS, we see a world where braiding Indigenous knowledge and Western science is at the forefront of scientific inquiry and an enhanced workforce of students, scientists, and Indigenous communities have the skills and training to conduct and apply braided methodologies," notes Atalay.
