A vibrant college community thrives on the enthusiasm and initiatives of its students. Within the College of Humanities & Fine Arts (HFA), the Student Leadership Group (SLG) embodies this spirit. Composed of passionate undergraduates, SLG's mission is simple: to foster a sense of community and creativity across HFA.
A Hub for Creativity and Connection
An official Registered Student Organization (RSO) supported by the College, the SLG strives to cultivate a vibrant sense of community within the college and university by organizing engaging HFA-inspired events and projects. Though SLG works to specifically foster community within the College of Humanities & Fine Arts, the organization welcomes students from all majors and class years, creating an inclusive atmosphere that enhances campus life.

Fostering Community: From the Voices of the Leaders
We sat down with SLG President Evan Owens, Editor-in-Chief of The Scribe Emma Grace Maroni, and Director of Student Success and Engagement Dylan Larke to learn what makes SLG a cherished part of their UMass Amherst experience.
Maroni reflects on her experience thus far with SLG stating, "I have learned how important community is. The HFA community is passionate and rewarding. We provide HFA with that sense of community."
Owens further encapsulated the organization's ethos by noting, "SLG is by and for HFA students"—yet with open arms to students of all majors. “Everyone in the SLG community is extremely well-rounded. I like that we can connect and get to know one another.”
SLG continues to provide students with a gateway to experiences beyond traditional classrooms. Planning small and large events centered around the humanities and fine arts, the organization hosts events like the Student Showcase, Open Mic Nights, and Movie Nights. One standout annual event that sparks enthusiasm is the SLG New York field trip.
Evan Owens enthusiastically said, “Students look forward to this exciting opportunity."
For SLG members, it's not just about creating events; it's about having a say in shaping their HFA experience and allowing students the autonomy to bring their own visions to life.
Students can further express their creativity by sending their work to The Scribe, HFA’s student-run literary and arts publication. With an online edition in the Fall and a print edition in the Spring, students can showcase their art, poetry, literature, photography and film throughout the year.
Owens states, "I like what we're doing; I like how we get a lot of say into what we're doing for the college as students. We are the student perspective.”
Larke highlighted the professional growth opportunities SLG provides, explaining, "Through SLG, students can gain valuable experience to add to their resumes, which can be a significant asset for internships and future job opportunities." SLG members lead meetings, organize events, form committees, and collaborate, creating a supportive network that allows professional development.
Owens wrapped up with a vision for the future, stating, "I hope we can organize even more events for the HFA community and continue to expand our reach."
Larke envisioned further collaborations, stating, "In the future, I see us partnering with HFA alumni and faculty members for SLG events, further enhancing our impact."
