Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina Receives Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowship

May 25, 2023 Academics

Content

Gretchen Gerzina

Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina, Paul Murray Kendall Chair in Biography and professor of English, has received a Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowship for 2023-24.

Gerzina is the author or editor of 10 books, four of them biographies, and several on Black British history. At Radcliffe, as the Beatrice Shepherd Blane Fellow in the Humanities, she will work on a book about the history of pre-20th-century Black women in Britain and the ways that their representation in literature, art and popular culture distorted their lived experiences in marriage, law and community.

A Radcliffe fellowship offers scholars in the humanities, sciences, social sciences and arts—as well as writers, journalists and other distinguished professionals—a rare chance to pursue ambitious projects for a full year in a vibrant interdisciplinary setting amid the resources of Harvard. The 53 2023–2024 fellows represent only 3.3 percent of the many applications that Radcliffe received.

A full list of 2023–2024 Radcliffe fellows can be found here.
