Graduate Student Fees: At a Glance - Fall 2024

Students are required to maintain their enrollment every semester and pay certain fees in addition to tuition.   This page summarizes the primary mandatory fees graduate students in state-sponsored degree programs can expect to pay.

  • The cost of fees varies depending on the number of credits for which a student is enrolled.
  • Students who have an assistantship of 10 hrs or more per week for a full semester receive a discount on their fees – see the column “GEO Eligible Employee” below.
  • All students must pay an entering fee in their first semester of $507.
  • Full-time Engineering students pay an additional fee of $445 per semester, GEO Eligible Employees receive a 75% discount in AY24-25.

Mandatory Graduate Student Health Fee
The Health Fee is not insurance. This fee must be paid by graduate students who are enrolled for 5 credits or more and by any student who signs up for the Student Health Benefit Plan. The fee supports an array of programs including health education and promotion services, four (4) initial visits for mental health crisis management, and public health services.

Mandatory Health Insurance
Massachusetts requires all students to have comprehensive health insurance. UMass Amherst offers excellent options and discounts for those students with qualifying assistantships. Details on the cost of the Student Health Benefit Plan, the family plan option, and GEO eligible position benefits can be found here. Additional information on benefits, including how to opt for alternate health insurance, can be found on the UHS website.
