Climate and Culture

At UMass Amherst, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where every individual is valued and supported. Through our commitment to empowerment and service, we focus on cultivating a climate and culture that embody dignity and respect for all. Our goal is to build a thriving community where every member feels a profound sense of belonging.

What is Campus Climate and Culture?

UMass Amherst defines "campus climate" as the overall environment and experiences of individuals and groups within the university community, with a specific focus on how aspects of culture, diversity, equity, access, and inclusion are experienced and enacted. This concept encompasses the attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors that contribute to a welcoming, supportive, and respectful atmosphere for everyone on campus. Key aspects of a healthy campus climate include:

  1. Diversity: Campus climate and culture include how the university values and supports a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and perspectives. This encompasses race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status, and more. A positive climate is one where diversity is actively celebrated and woven into the fabric of campus life.
  2. Equity: UMass Amherst's climate reflects its commitment to ensuring fair treatment, access, and opportunities for all community members. Equity involves identifying and addressing systemic barriers that may prevent certain groups from thriving.
  3. Inclusion: A key aspect of campus culture is fostering an environment where every member feels valued, respected, and able to contribute fully. Inclusion goes beyond representation to ensure all voices are heard and considered in decision-making processes.
  4. Access: Campus climate and culture also reflect efforts to make resources, opportunities, and physical and digital spaces accessible to everyone, including individuals with disabilities and those from underrepresented or underserved groups.

UMass Amherst’s focus on these elements aims to create a campus environment where all individuals feel safe, supported, and empowered to achieve their full potential while fostering mutual respect and understanding. Programs, policies, and initiatives in these areas are designed to assess and improve the lived experiences of the university community.

Campus Climate Survey

The survey asked our UMass community about their perceptions of the campus climate for inclusion, experiences in classrooms, immediate work environments, and at the university overall, as well as examining senses of belonging and feelings of connection. The survey is administered every several years, with 2021 being the most recent. This section also has resources as companion pieces to the data.
