Congratulations Prof. Thom Hannum!
The UMMB is proud to congratulate Associate Director emeritus Prof. Thom Hannum on his induction into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame! This is possibly the highest honor a percussionist can receive, and is a fitting tribute to Prof. Hannum's incredible career. Prof. Hannum came to UMass in 1979 as a graduate student and built the UMass Drumline into one of national renown. He also started the UMass Hoop Band and taught the Marima Bands and Marimba Ensembles. Perhaps Prof. Hannum's biggest legacy is how he led the UMMB in 2010, following the passing of Prof. George N. Parks. He served as a mentor for countless students at UMass and beyond, not the least of which was current Associate Director Ian Hale.
Prof. Hannum was inducted into the UMMB Hall of Fame in 1996 and retired from UMass in 2020. We congratulate Prof. Hannum on this latest. well-deserved, accomplishment!
