Epsilon Nu was chartered on May 16th, 1969 with twelve founding brothers, accompanied by the support and approval of John Jenkins, the band director at the time and Walter Chestnut, head of the UMass Trumpet Studio. The chapter grew and flourished as time went on, especially while entering the George N. Parks era which lasted from 1977-2010. As Timothy Todd Anderson took over in 2011, the chapter continued strong, celebrating fifty years of service in 2019.
Over the years we have been the recipients of several prestigious awards. The chapter was recognized by the Massachusetts Senate in 1994 with an Official Citation for 25 years of
dedicated service. Notably, we were selected for the Most Outstanding Chapter Award in 1984, 2004, and 2014. Most recently, the brothers were recognized for Alumni Outreach in 2021, for our work in keeping in touch with alumni during the Covid-19 pandemic.
As Epsilon Nu prepares for the upcoming semester, we continue to strive for excellence as one of the top chapters in the nation.
Each day Monday through Friday of the fall semester, the brothers work jointly with the sisters of Tau Beta Sigma to repaint the practice fields for rehearsal. We meet up forty minutes before the start of rehearsal and get as much done as possible. Additionally, we arrange chairs and music stands in the Big Room throughout the school year for concert band, hoop & ice band, and indoor marching band rehearsals. On game days, we move water and snacks from the band building to the stadium and distribute them to the band during the game. After the post-game show and closing remarks, we clean up our section. This is all volunteer work; a way for us to give back to the band and show our pride in being members of the UMMB.
In addition to daily service, the brothers complete one service project per month. Recent projects include building shelves for the Honor Guard’s equipment, volunteering at the audition days for prospective music students, and cleaning the mat used by the colorguard.
Interested in learning more about our incredible organization? We will be hosting our next round of recruitment events this September. In the meantime, find any of the brothers and ask us about ourselves! We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
