Youngmin Yi, sociology, has been selected as a 2023-2024 Visiting Scholar at the University of Wisconsin - Madison Center for Demography and Ecology. The Visiting Scholar Program aims to enhance the research interests and resources available to population scholars from underrepresented groups, to foster interaction among a diverse set of scholars, and to broaden the corps of population researchers.

Yi studies the intersection of family life with the criminal justice, child welfare, and immigration systems in the U.S. She is especially interested in two broad issues: these institutional intersections as sites of (re)production and moderation of social disparities in wellbeing, and the role that these policy institutions play in shaping and racializing our definitions and experiences of family, familial relationships, and the life stages of childhood and the transition to adulthood.

As a Visiting Scholar, Yi will spend one week (October 16-20, 2023) at UW-Madison interacting with resident faculty, presenting a population-related research seminar, participating in the CDE thematic working groups, drawing on faculty support for the development of a grant proposal, and becoming acquainted with staff and resources.
