Jayati Ghosh, economics, recently authored an article focused on the vast problems that occur globally due to pollution from plastics. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution is continuing its ongoing efforts to conclude a global treaty to end plastic pollution. However, the treaty is meeting resistance from powerful interests who would benefit from continued plastic production. These interests prefer an approach that would focus on recycling. 

"To be sure, recycling is essential," writes Ghosh. "But it cannot deliver the necessary reductions in plastic production and consumption, nor can it address the effects of plastic pollution on health."
