Master of Landscape Architecture: FAQs
What can I do with an MLA from UMass Amherst?
The Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) is an accredited degree program that prepares you to be a leader in the broad range of activities in the landscape architecture profession.
With an MLA, you will focus on the intersection between the human and natural worlds, learning to design with the natural environment in mind to maximize benefits for your clients, communities, and society. The program emphasizes studio projects that develop your design and problem-solving skills. Through a deep understanding of the complexities of environmental design, your MLA degree is useful globally: greenways, parks, urban design, gardens, neighborhoods, waterfronts, and community design are a few of your many possible focus areas.
The master's program emphasizes real-world projects and the valuable experience of receiving feedback and guidance on your work from professors in studio-based courses. You will be ready to enter the workforce for your community and be on a fast track to your professional certification by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB).
What types of jobs can students expect after graduating?
Graduates of the MLA program work as environmental stewards and guardians of our cultural landscape heritage, as private practitioners and avant-garde designers who imaginatively interpret and resolve design problems, as planners and managers whose design perspective qualifies them to evaluate and create environmental policies, and as educators who continue to explore and teach in colleges and universities throughout the world.
