Non-degree enrollment at UMass Amherst is typically utilized by the following students:

  • Certificate Students: not admitted or enrolled in a formal degree program but pursuing an undergraduate or graduate certificate
  • Guest Students: trying a class to explore a particular program offering; need to fulfill a requirement and transfer the credits to another institution; taking a credit course for personal or professional growth
  • Pre-Matriculated Students: admitted to the University but would like to take a class before their official admit term
  • Inactive Students: who previously took a UMass Amherst class as a non-degree student or would like to take a class before being readmitted/reactivated into a UMass Amherst degree program.

IMPORTANT: Non-degree students enrolled at UMass Amherst will be given a UMass Amherst email address (@umass.edu). It is imperative that non-degree students regularly monitor their UMass Amherst email account once they have registered themselves in classes as this will be the primary email used by all UMass Amherst instructors and offices to notify non-degree students of important information.
