Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP)

What We Offer
LSAMP Scholars Seminars
LSAMP offers two 2-credit seminars that support students in reaching their academic and career goals. The courses support students in career development and graduate school preparedness.
Funding
Scholars are eligible for funding to engage in research on-campus and to attend conferences related to their discipline. LSAMP students are supported in finding research opportunities.
Mentoring
LSAMP students receive continuous mentoring during their college career. LSAMP scholars also become mentors for incoming LSAMP students.
LSAMP Community of Science Scholars
LSAMP scholars attend and participate in a number of UMass Amherst and Alliance activities. These include research and graduate school symposiums and leadership conferences. We work together to reach our goals.
Local, National and International Summer Research Experiences
Scholars are supported in finding local, national, and international summer research opportunities.
Undergraduate Research Funding
The LSAMP program provides funding to help support undergraduate research in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) laboratories. The Research projects are directed and sponsored by STEM research faculty, and participants will work under their mentorship. There are a series of programs and activities for LSAMP participants that include seminars on undergraduate research, invited speakers, and opportunities for students to present their work.

About the Northeast LSAMP Alliance
The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is a program supported by the National Science Foundation. The program is a multidisciplinary, comprehensive, undergraduate program designed to increase substantially the quantity and quality of students receiving baccalaureate degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines and, subsequently, to increase the number of students entering graduate school who obtain doctoral degrees in STEM fields supported by NSF.
The Northeast LSAMP (NELSAMP) is an alliance comprised of five institutions: the Universities of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Northeastern University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. NELSAMP has developed and shared best practices and educational opportunities to provide our LSAMP students with both proven interventions, such as mentoring and undergraduate research opportunities, and emerging interventions with high potential for success.
The program is designed to implement and enhance programs that encourage and support students in the STEM fields. Support is offered in the form of research opportunities, pre-college and college academic preparation, and graduate school programs. Each partner institution participates in Alliance-wide activities and offers project activities at its own campus.
GEM GRAD Lab and the LSAMP Undergraduate Research Workshop
The GEM GRAD Lab is an annual event held every fall. It is a fun and engaging symposium for juniors and seniors who are considering graduate science or engineering education. Focusing on the global importance of research and innovation, life-long career benefits, and real-world role models, the symposium helps each student envision their future as a leader in science or technology, successfully apply for a GEM fellowship, and gain entry to a graduate STEM program.
