Financial Aid & Scholarships

AcademicWorks is a scholarship resource for current students enrolled at UMass Amherst. AcademicWorks works by matching students with scholarship opportunities that they qualify for. These include scholarships offered through the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Commonwealth Honors College, CICS, the Alumni Association, financial aid, and the department. Simply enroll in AcademicWorks, fill out the general scholarship application and the application for your college, and watch as all the scholarships you’re qualified for become listed on your screen.

How to Use AcademicWorks:

1. Go to the Academic Works webpage and sign in with your UMass Net ID and password.
2. Complete the General Application. Once you do this, you’ll see all the scholarships you qualify for. Once you do this, you’ll see any supplemental applications for your major(s). Completing the supplemental applications will qualify you for additional scholarships.
3. Click on a scholarship link and upload supplementary documents (resumes, letters from faculty, etc., depending on the award)
4. Submit your application and see your dashboard, which shows you the status of any pending and submitted applications.

Enroll in Academic Works

Professional conference scholarships are used for BSLA/ASLA, APA, or other conferences. Priority is given to students who will graduate the year of the conference and students who are presenting a poster or paper. Priority is also based on GPA. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible.

These scholarships support students planning to attend the ACSP or CELA conference. Preference is given to doctoral students who are nearing completion of their degree and are presenting a paper at the conference. 

1. Robert Livingston Craig Scholarship Fund: Given to Junior or Senior BSLA student who has demonstrated outstanding ability in designing, drafting, and site planning. Preference is given to a student who is the child of a first generation American or a member of an economically disadvantaged group from Western Massachusetts who has demonstrated distinction in design.
2. Paul W. Ryan Scholarship Fund: Given to a Junior or Senior in LARP (either LA or SCD). Due weight is given to financial need and academic standing.
3. LARP Alumni Award for Diversity and Inclusion: Given to an entering MLA or MRP student to fund summer research between their first and second years on their thesis or master's project. The student meet domestic diversity goals and demonstrate academic excellence.  
4. Paul Whitney Rhoades and Carolina Pree Rhoades Award: Awarded to BSLA and MLA students. Due weight is given to character, personality, financial need, and dedication to continued professional work in the designated area of interest.
5. Thomas B. and Loraine K. LeNoir Scholarship Fund: Awarded to undergraduate and graduate students, with preference given to students interested in the preservation and restoration of natural sites that have been damaged by destruction or despoliation of the native landscape features. For graduates, the award is given to a deserving student doing their dissertation, thesis, or master's project in the area of natural lands preservation or site restoration. The recipient will be chosen based on their thesis/project/dissertation proposal. For undergraduates, preference is given to a student who is doing an honors thesis related to the topic.
6. Robert P. McGorum Scholarship: Given to a BSLA and MLA student. in alternating years to Landscape Architecture students and Horticulture students. Criteria: Academic Achievement.
7. Charles Tooker ’53 Student Support Fund: Given to students in the department whose career aspirations are focused on landscape architecture.

The department receives a limited amount of funds from the Graduate School at UMass Amherst to support graduate students' travel to conferences where they will be presenting research. If you are interested, please submit an Application Form (found on the Resources webpage) to the Department Chair, Professor Henry Renski (@email).
