UMass Amherst Extension with The Nature Conservancy, Communities Responding to Extreme Weather (CREW), and Urban Harbors Institute, in partnership with Professionals of Color in the Environment (POCIE), are seeking an undergraduate intern interested in coastal climate change adaptation.
This internship is part of an effort to create pathways for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) students into the environmental field. It emphasizes mentorship and will include professional development programming by POCIE and Mass Audubon. Undergraduate students who self-identify as BIPOC are strongly encouraged to apply, with a preference for upperclassmen (including those graduating in 2025).
The intern will contribute to a project focused on community-driven relocation as a nature-based solution to reduce flood risk and increase resilience for coastal communities. The project, funded by a state grant, seeks to engage coastal residents in Massachusetts with sometimes difficult conversations around flooding, relocation, and the future of our coasts. The intern and supervisors will determine specific project activities together, similar to a capstone or thesis project, based on the intern’s interests and expertise. Probable activities include assisting with community engagement and learning network events, developing a website, or guiding youth engagement efforts. These activities will expose the student to a variety of real-world experiences in Extension work and they may interact with professionals across state, federal, nonprofit and university organizations.
Commitment and compensation:
- Compensation is $22-$24/hr depending on experience.
- The time commitment is flexible with a maximum of 28 hours per week and can vary throughout the internship depending on student availability and project tasks. Flexible start date, ideally early May. Position is through the summer, with the potential to become a mentor to a high school intern.
Qualifications:
- The intern must have familiarity with climate change topics, excellent communication skills, and be organized and detail-oriented.
- Preferred candidates will have past experience with one or more of the following: website development; science communication via writing, video, and/or graphic design; organizing events; coastal relocation topics; education and outreach; or community engagement. Please specify your area(s) of experience in your application.
- The intern should be willing to travel within Massachusetts for occasional events and access to lodging in proximity to the coast is preferred.
To apply:
Email @email and @email with a resume and a few sentences explaining your interest in this position and areas of experience. The position will remain open until filled, but we recommend applying by the end of March.
