A local site of the National Writing Project, the Western Massachusetts Writing Project (WMWP) creates a professional community where teachers and other educators feel welcomed to come together to deepen individual and collective experiences as writers and our understanding of teaching and learning in order to challenge and transform our practice. Our aim is to improve learning in our schools—urban, rural, and suburban.

WMWP is a local site of the National Writing Project, sponsored by the University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of English and College of Humanities & Fine Arts. WMWP provides professional development and literacy leadership programs by teachers for teachers.

We are a professional community of teachers who

  • Value reflection and inquiry;
  • Care about issues of race, gender, language, class, and culture; and
  • Come together to deepen our experience as writers, share our knowledge and expertise, transform our practice, improve student learning, and develop expertise and leadership.
