Basic Needs Initiatives
UMass is committed to supporting and resourcing students in meeting their basic needs through a number of on-campus programs and off-campus partnerships.
Financial Support Programs
The Dean of Students office has programs to combat the impact of unexpected financial emergencies on academic success.
- Short Term Loans: Up to $500 for undergraduates and up to $1000 for graduate students (repayment within the established due date, typically 30 days—can be extended on case-by-base basis)
- Microgrants: Up to $500 for unexpected/isolated financial emergency. See application for more specific eligibility criteria.
- Angel Fund Emergency Grant: Provides emergency grants to enrolled undergraduate and graduate students experiencing unexpected financial emergencies due to changes in federal immigration policy.
Student Care Supply Closet
The Dean of Students Office offers a free supply closet to help supplement personal care and household item needs, such as shampoo and conditioner, soap and body wash, toothpaste and toothbrushes, paper products, cleaning products, pads and tampons, and hair products (including for natural hair).
Food Security
There are a number of on- and off-campus programs designed to support student food security, which include:
- The Campus Pantry: ASC at UMass a free grocery program to support basic needs and help promote well-being.
- Partnership with the Amherst Survival Center
- Local food delivery options, as well as weekly available meals
- UMass Amherst Dining Services Food Security Initiatives
- Meal Plan Assistance Program — partnership between Dining Services and the Dean of Students Office. Click on the link for more information regarding eligibility, and the application form.
- Supplemental Meal Swipe Program — available through Dining Services
- Assistance signing up for SNAP, WIC, and other public benefits - the 1st Wednesday of the month in Bartlett 102.
- UMass Food Recovery Network: Free hot delicious dinner to go (twice a week during the semester).
