The UMass Writing Program is pleased to announce the winners of the Best Text Contest for 2024. The winning texts can be accessed in the UMass Best Text Collection.
Aaron Tillman and the Writing Program have received an Open Education Initiative Grant which awards outstanding faculty-led projects that embrace the principles of open education.
We are saddened to report the passing of Professor Emeritus Peter Elbow, who died after a short illness on February 6. Peter was on the faculty of the UMass Amherst English Department from 1987 to 2000, and directed the Writing Program from 1996 to 2000.
The Writing Program's Best Text Contest is currently accepting submissions for a banner image for the 2025 Best Text winners. The winning entry will be used on the Writing Program website and promotional materials as well as the Best Text Collection website.

J Palmeri, Professor of English and Director of the Writing Program at Georgetown University, visited campus Thursday, May 2nd to talk to the Writing Program about AI and writing. Palmeri presented “When ChatGPT Fails: Towards A Queer Pedagogy of Writing With, Against, and Beyond AI.”
