What should my academic background include?
Students in the DACSS program come from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds. Anyone who has completed an undergraduate degree from an accredited program can pursue introductory and advanced training in computational social science, although we are looking for students with a strong problem-solving mindset, a substantive background or interest in social science, strong communication skills, and a willingness to engage with mathematical and logical concepts.
We assume no prior knowledge of programming languages used in data science (e.g., R, Python, or Java), but some prior experience with programming will make it easier to keep up with weekly computer-based course assignments. We encourage all students without programming experience to consider working through an introductory programming module online, such as DataCamp's Introduction to R. One of our intro courses, DACSS 601: Fundamentals of Data Science, is designed to make sure all students in the program are well prepared for the rest of their coursework.
What is needed for the application? Do I need to take the GRE?
The GRE is not required. However, you may submit your scores if you opted to take the test.
When you submit your application through the UMass Graduate School application portal, you will need to include the following materials
- Personal Statement: Your personal statement should address why you are interested in pursuing a degree in the Data Analytics and Computational Social Science program and what makes you a good fit. Be sure to describe any relevant research or programming experience, whether obtained in the classroom or in another setting, and how the skills you develop in the DACSS program will help facilitate the path that you will take upon graduation.

- At least two letters of recommendation: At least one of these letters should come from a current or former professor.
- Short essay response: The application will provide a prompt for a short essay. You will be required to complete the essay as part of your application package.

You are also welcomed to provide a GRE score and a writing sample; however, these are optional and not required to complete an application to the program.
What are the application deadlines?
For those interested in the online program, April 15 is the deadline for Summer or Fall enrollment, with December 1 being the deadline for Spring enrollment.
For those interested in the in-person program: For Fall enrollment, the deadlines are January 1 for priority admission and April 15 for regular decision. For Spring enrollment, October 1 is the deadline for priority admission and November 15 is the deadline for regular decision.
How long is the program?
The MS in DACSS can be completed in as little as one year. You can follow a one-year fast track plan, with the last three months compatible with full-time work. The online and part-time programs generally take 18-24 months to complete.
Can I complete the program as a part-time student?
Yes, the online MS in DACSS is designed to be flexible for working professionals. The coursework and degree outcomes are the same for both the in-person and online MS in DACSS programs.
