The  Five College International Relations Certificate Program offers an opportunity for students with interests in international affairs, global policy, international law,  global history, global economics, and area studies to learn from award-winning Five College faculty. The Five College Consortium fosters academic excellence through inter-campus collaboration and is comprised of the University of Massachusetts, Hampshire College, Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College. The IR Certificate can be combined with any undergraduate major and is a way of indicating to graduate schools or future employers that you have strong interest in world affairs.

Requirements

  1. A course on introductory world politics
  2. A course on global institutions or problems
  3. A course on the international financial and/or commercial system
  4. A course on international history since 1798
  5. A course on contemporary American foreign policy
  6. Proficiency in a contemporary foreign language and/or two years of language at the college level or its equivalent
  7. Two courses on the politics, economy and/or society of foreign areas, of which one must involve the study of a Global South country or region

Archived UMass Course Information

  • Requirements can be fulfilled in any order.
  • Candidates must complete the required courses (with the exception of the foreign language courses) with grades of at least B or better.
  • It is most helpful to fulfill Requirement 1 by taking Political Science 121, World Politics, early in your studies.
  • Note that if you do not take introductory macroeconomics or microeconomics your options for fulfilling Requirement 3 on the international financial and commercial system are very limited.  You should not wait until senior year to fulfill this requirement.
  • It is possible to use transfer and study abroad courses, but these need to be approved by one of the IR Certificate advisors.
