What can you do with a major in political science? The simplest answer is anything you want. A political science major provides you with the critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and writing skills necessary to succeed in a wide variety of career paths. After graduation, our students pursue grad school, begin their career, and engage in volunteering/service.
A major in political science is valuable preparation for a wide variety of career fields and academic pursuits. These include law, business, and corporate positions in environmental protection, consumer affairs, and public affairs; journalism; federal and state government positions in environmental protection, criminal justice, public health, welfare, and transportation; state and local management and administration in planning, zoning, housing, human resources, environmental policy, education policy, law enforcement, and budgeting and finance; positions with nonprofit research and advocacy organizations in human rights, international development, and other concerns; management of domestic or international grass-roots development or refugee assistance organizations; and educational administration.

GRADUATE SCHOOL
If you are considering a stand-alone master’s, a UMass 4+1 accelerated master’s, or a PhD program, you will want to connect with UMass faculty and administrative staff in those programs. You will need to prepare a writing sample, letters of recommendation, and possibly the GRE (UMass 4+1 program does not require the GRE). The short video below has more information.
