TTII 101: Intro to Teaching Intensive Institutions (panel)
What might an average day look like when an institution values teaching more than research? Do you know what a 4:4 teaching load is, let alone how to manage it? This session will introduce participants to the basics of working at a teaching intensive institution. While all are welcome, this session is strongly recommended for participants who earned their undergraduate degree from a research intensive institution (R1) or at an institution outside the United States.

  • Kristen Porter-Utley, Framingham State University

  • Nicole Porther, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts

  • Lisa Rapp, Springfield Technical Community College

  • Emily Todd, Eastern Connecticut State University

  • Moderator: Beth Jakob, University of Massachusetts Amherst

TTII 201: Finding Your Fit at a Teaching Intensive Institution (panel)
Do teaching intensive institutions seem pretty much the same? Think again! Much like shopping for cars, one must research different makes and models to find the right fit. This session will talk about how teaching intensive institutions can differ (students, mission, size, public/private, etc.) and how you can sort through it all to find your “fit.”

  • Belinda L. Kadambi, Bunker Hill Community College

  • Elizabeth Markovits, Mount Holyoke College

  • Enrique Morales-Diaz, Westfield State University

  • Gina M. Semprebon, Bay Path University

  • Moderator: Johanna Yunker, University of Massachusetts Amherst

The Community College Experience: Mission and Purpose
Many professionals say that passion determined their path – and that is certainly true for us! Community colleges play a vital role in the higher education landscape. • Raúl Gutiérrez, Holyoke Community College

  • Vanessa Martínez, Holyoke Community College

Maintaining a Scholarly Identity at a Teaching Intensive Institution
Maintaining our identities as scholars and researchers can feel like a luxury while teaching many courses and serving our departments and institutions. But it’s vital to a balanced and meaningful career, and, in this session, a humanist and a scientist will talk about strategies for creating that balance.

  • Ben Railton, Fitchburg State University

  • Mao-Lun Weng, Westfield State University

Room A

Teaching as a Social Justice Calling
Many people see working at teaching-intensives as a kind of social justice calling (esp. at public regional colleges and community colleges where access is so important). This session highlights faculty who both see their work at a TII in that light and are working explicitly on their campus to create a more inclusive and accessible education.

  • Juliet Lee, Westfield State University

  • Gabriel Aquino, Westfield State University

Room C

Teaching Engineering at a Teaching Intensive Institution
The job description for engineering faculty positions can vary widely across different disciplines and institutions. This session will provide an overview of faculty life at a teaching intensive institution, with a focus on engineering programs.

  • Sarah Moore, Smith College

  • Michael Rust, Western New England University

  • Katherine Schlef, Western New England University
