Cielo Sharkus, a UMass Amherst graduate student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been awarded the Switzer Environmental Fellowship, a one-year fellowship for graduate students from academic and personal backgrounds in New England and California. The students selected for this fellowship’s career goals focus on environmental improvement and problem-solving.
Sharkus is the founder of Humans for the Opposition to Pollution and Emissions (H.O.P.E.), a non-profit organization that works to create community-based structures that support disenfranchised community members by addressing environmental inequity through education, research, and project-based learning. Sharkus has previously been awarded the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) award in 2021 for her involvement in H.O.P.E.
