Sociology

Study how society works, and how it can be changed for the better. Sociology is the study of human life, of family, gender, race, and ethnic relations, and of aging, education, immigration, religion, work, and health. At UMass Amherst, the Department of Sociology emphasizes the study of the self and the intersection of the personal and the societal. At the undergraduate level, students engage in rigorous coursework and directed research as they prepare for further graduate study or careers across the professional spectrum. At the graduate level, sociology degree candidates engage in research that changes the way we understand society and societal change.
