The study of Japanese language and literature is diverse and exciting, with a rich tradition that has spurred innovation in literature, engineering, chemistry, linguistics, and more. At UMass Amherst the Japanese language and literature programs give students a sound command of the language and a solid background in the significance and context of the literature, culture, and civilization. Undergraduate students often study abroad in Japan to deepen their appreciation of their studies. At the graduate level, students hone their skills and narrow their academic focus to prepare for careers in academia or industry.
