Investigate the myriad ways that humans interact with our planet. An inherently interdisciplinary field, geography studies the dynamics of global change and examines local experiences within their global context. At UMass Amherst, geography students have the opportunity to integrate the social and natural sciences through research and coursework that address critical environmental and social issues, from climate change to urbanization. At the graduate level, students narrow their focus into a more specific subfield of geography such as political ecology, sustainability, or environmental history. Geography opens the door to a wide variety of careers from environmental and regional planning to education or academia.
