Vivian Dai has receives CANE Helen Maria Chesnutt Scholarship

Vivian Dai has received the Classical Association of New England's Helen Maria Chesnutt Scholarship for Equity in Classical Study, which supports undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented groups as they pursue the study of Classics and the ancient Mediterranean world. The Chesnutt Scholarship will support Vivian's study and travel in Greece in summer 2025.

Ramsby Awarded CANE Barlow-Beach Award for Distinguished Service

eresa Ramsby, professor of Classics at UMass Amherst, received the Barlow-Beach Award for Distinguished Service at the annual meeting of the Classical Association of New England on Saturday, March 22, 2025, held at Yale University. The president of CANE, an alumnus of the UMass Amherst Classics MAT program, presented the award with a speech about her contributions to CANE, to teacher preparation, and to the discipline of Classics.

UMass Classics Welcomes the Marios Philippides Collection

In January 2024, the UMass Amherst Department of Classics was the recipient of a bequest of ancient Greek artifacts for use as a study collection. The objects were part of the collection of long-time UMass Amherst Classics Professor Marios Philippides. With Philippides’s tragic and untimely passing in 2023, his widow, Corinne, sought to honor his legacy and commitment to undergraduate education by giving the collection to the school.  With support from the Kress foundation, Prof. Hogue and four students from the Classics department are cataloging those artifact. Prof. Felton presents keynote in Madrid

Professor Debbie Felton gave invited presentations at two seminars in Madrid, Spain during the week of October 14. The first presentation, “The Uses of Humor in Ancient and Modern Ghost Stories,” was for the two-day seminar “Mito y tradición clásica en la literatura policíaca y de terror” at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (14–15 Oct.). The second was a keynote speech on “Interpreting Monsters: Approaches to the Cyclops Polyphemus” for the sixth annual Mythical Projections seminar held at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Dr. Melissa Mueller to offer Inaugural Stehle-Johnson Lecture

Prof. Mueller will deliver a lecture entitled "Sappho's Pronouns in/as Performance" at the University of Maryland.  Her talk returns to Eva Stehle’s work on Sappho’s personal poetry, with the goal of exploring how pronouns in Sappho interpellate the reader into the textual event of the poem’s performance.
