Did the Phoenicians mine copper in Michigan? Is the Lost Tomb of Alexander the Great located in Illinois? Did Antony and Cleopatra’s heirs lead an exodus of first century Christians across the Atlantic Ocean? Documentaries produced by major TV networks in recent decades suggest proof of these claims is buried in the backwoods of the Midwestern United States. In his interview on the podcast "Archaeology with Flint Dibble," classics lecturer, Joseph Wilson, debunks these myths by discussing his research on "Burrows Cave," the site where these allegedly classical artifacts originate. Despite being forgeries, these 'finds' have been sold to amateur collectors for considerable sums. Dr. Wilson reveals the basic epigraphy techniques that can be used to prove that these artifacts are forgeries, combatting misinformation while advocating for scholars' increased engagement with the public about archaeological heritage.
