book cover of The Oxford Handbook of Monsters In Classical Myth by Debbie Felton

In June 2025, Professors Debbie Felton (editor and contributor) and Carolina López-Ruiz (contributor) appeared on the podcast Lesche: Ancient Greece, New Ideas to discuss The Oxford Handbook of Monsters in Classical Myth. Lesche host Johanna Hanink, Professor of Classics at Brown University, had questions for Professor Felton about the genesis of the Handbook, how the contributor list came together, and how the pandemic interrupted the project. Professor López-Ruiz discussed her chapter on the Sphinx, pointing out its West Asian origins and the differences between Egyptian and Greek sphinxes. The episode also discusses the basics of monster theory and provides examples of perspective-taking, including the Aesopian fable of “The Satyr and the Traveler.”
