Pathways for the community leaders of the future.
Through pre-college outreach, immersive summer programs, and engaging events, the Henry M. Thomas III Center at Springfield is committed to youth engagement and education. We partner with Springfield Public Schools and other local organizations to bring K-12 students closer to the university experience. The center also serves as a space for youth events and challenges. In these programs, students can gain hands-on experience while embedded in the UMass and Springfield communities.
College Matters for U
In partnership with Springfield Public Schools, this program brings first through twelfth grade students to the center for a half-day field trip. Students interact with UMass faculty and researchers and learn about the process of selecting and applying for college.
Medical Encounters
High school students can explore careers in the medical field through this partnership with World Is Our Classroom and Springfield Public Schools. Focusing on college and career readiness, the program offers ten different “encounters” with fields ranging from nutrition to nursing.
Public Health Equity Young Scholars
This free summer enrichment program through the UMass College of Public Health and Health Sciences is aimed at rising 7-10th grade students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. Scholars gain real-world experience with a variety of public health topics and health-related career paths.
Junior Achievement EnTEENpreneur Challenge
In this celebration of youth entrepreneurship, students from area public schools participate in a “Shark Tank”-style competition. The top projects are eligible for prizes. The Henry M. Thomas III Center at Springfield provides space and financial support.
