Learning a second language is invaluable in allowing one to build relationships, become immersed in a foreign culture, experience films and literature in their original language, bridge communication gaps, or aid in diplomatic relations. It could even give a potential employee the leg up when applying for competitive positions.

By joining the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, you uncover a world of potential experiences. We offer six programs of study. The department offers an immersive experience, including small class sizes, opportunities to study abroad, cultural exposure to art and literature, one-on-one advising relationships with faculty, and partnerships with multiculturally focused programs, institutes, and centers across the UMass Amherst campus and the Five College Consortium, including the Five College Center for the Study of World Languages.
