Declaring a Major
If you are interested in declaring Managerial Economics or Environmental & Natural Resource Economics (ENRE) as a major, please complete the following steps:
1. Review our Undergraduate Academic Requirements and consider if Managerial Economics or ENRE is right for you.
Managerial Economics and ENRE are rigorous, math-intensive programs. Students in both majors are interested in economics and are required to complete courses in introductory and intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics. Students are also required to complete courses in statistics (introductory and intermediate) and quantitative methods.
Students considering a major in Managerial Economics or ENRE may want to select from the following courses to get started:
- Math 127 Calculus for Life and Social Sciences (or Math 131) (this is based on placement - if needed, students should take the necessary preparatory math coursework first)
- Res-Econ 102 Introduction to Resource Economics (or Econ 103)
- Econ 104 Introduction to Macroeconomics
- Res-Econ 212 Introductory Statistics for the Social Sciences (or Statistc 240)
- Res-Econ 106 Economics is Everywhere or Res-Econ 107 Hunger in a Global Economy or Res-Econ 262 Environmental Economics or Res-Econ 263
2. Watch our Recorded Information Session
Click the link here to view our recorded information session.
***Please note, the video refers to "Resource Economics" - This major title was changed in the summer of 2024 to "Environmental & Natural Resource Economics (ENRE)." The major requirements have not changed, so all information within the video remains accurate, with the exception of the Resource Economics major title itself. The Managerial Economics major continues with no change, and the minor is still a Resource Economics minor.
3. Submit a statement of interest.
If you would like to move forward in declaring Managerial Economics or ENRE after reviewing our Academic Requirements, please complete our Statement of Interest (a secure form). Please make sure to continue on to the next step!
4. Email Ruth Glickman DeLisle when you have completed the three previous steps stating you wish to declare. In your email, please designate either Managerial Economics or ENRE as your preferred major.
Your major in Managerial Economics or ENRE will be declared within 7 business days of the date you sent your email. You will receive a confirmation email that your major has been changed.
After you've reviewed the information above, if you have any additional questions and are a current UMass student, please make an appointment through Navigate under Advising > Explore How to Declare or Change Majors > Select Managerial Economics or ENRE. If you are a prospective UMass student interested in our program with additional questions, please feel free to reach out to Ruth Glickman DeLisle or Dorise Heller for assistance.
