Situated in the intellectually rich, scenic Connecticut River Valley, the UMass Amherst Department of History offers students the opportunity to study with a respected faculty engaged in exciting research. The nationally-recognized Public History Program and our Community Engagement programs bring historical scholarship to the teachers and people of the Commonwealth, while the Undergraduate Program and the innovative UMass Amherst / Five College Graduate Program in History enables students to explore the resources and faculties of Amherst College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College, as well as the University itself. In preparing for a variety of careers of critical thought and communication, UMass Amherst history students work with faculty members in the department as well as the larger UMass and Five College community.
