About Climbing at UMass RecWell

Located on the first floor of the Fieldstone residential building (345 Lincoln Avenue; entrance on Mass Avenue), our bouldering gym offers climbs up to 14 feet, designed for all skill levels. Whether you're new to climbing or experienced, you'll find opportunities for both challenge and connection.

The space features a lounge area with a fireplace and an outdoor courtyard with fire pits, creating a welcoming environment for relaxation and socializing. It's a new gathering spot on campus for climbers and friends alike.

Things You Should Know

The RecWell Climbing Gym is an age restricted facility - participants must be age 18.
Anyone with a UMass Amherst Recreation Membership has access to the RecWell Climbing Gym.
Use of the Climbing wall is FREE to all UMass Amherst undergraduates.
Currently, guest passes are not available or allowed.

Orientation

All climbers will have to take a one-time, basic orientation before using the facility.
This orientation will provide climbers with the know-how to access the space, info regarding our policies and procedures, safety tips, and the best ways to connect with our community and meet our RecWell staff!
Orientation will be available on the hour, every hour during hours of operation.

All climbers must complete the climbing orientation regardless of their climbing experience.

Equipment Policies

Climbing equipment can be checked out by all climbers who are active RecWell members, and who have completed the one-time orientation. Present your valid UCard to our RecWell staff to check out the equipment you may need.

All climbing equipment must remain in the climbing area and is due back before the facility closes. No overnight rental of equipment allowed.

Rockwell Facility Rental

RockWell offers a unique, high-energy environment ideal for private events, team-building sessions, and special gatherings. This proposal outlines a flexible pricing structure designed to provide a clear baseline rental rate while allowing clients to customize their experience through optional add-ons.

Base Rental Rate
$150 per hour (2-hour minimum)

Includes:

Exclusive use of the RockWell bouldering facility
Access to climbing walls and general seating areas
Introductory safety orientation
Standard facility lighting and music system
On-site staff member(s) for supervision and safety oversight
Includes climbing shoe rental while supplies last

Add-On Services

To enhance the experience, clients may select from the following optional services:

1. Climbing Instruction

$100 per instructor, per hour
Climbing Instructor staff provide:
- Technique coaching for beginners or intermediate climbers
- Structured group activities (ideal for team-building)
Ratio: 1 instructor per 12 participants

2. Catering (UMass Dining Services)

Pricing varies based on menu selection
Options include:
- Light refreshments (snacks, beverages)
- Buffet-style meals
- Custom event menus
Starting range: $15–$35 per person

This tiered pricing structure allows RockWell to remain accessible for smaller groups while offering scalable options for larger or more customized events. The goal is to provide a memorable, safe, and engaging climbing experience tailored to each client’s needs.
