Summer Camp Counselor - Accepting Applications
About the Program
The University of Massachusetts Department of Recreation and Wellbeing (RecWell) offers an engaging Discovery Camp for children ages 7-13. Held in two, one-week sessions, Monday through Friday, with full-day sessions and aftercare, this program helps young campers build confidence, develop healthy habits, and discover the joy of movement through sports, creative activities, and wellness education in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Position Overview
- UMass Discovery Camp, run by the Department of Recreation and Wellbeing (RecWell), is seeking enthusiastic, dedicated Camp Counselors to lead and supervise campers through a dynamic daily program of field games, fitness activities, arts and crafts, campus discovery, and outdoor adventures. Camp Counselors play a vital role in creating a positive, safe environment where children can explore new skills, build friendships, focus on teamwork, build healthy habits, and grow.
- Age group: 7–13 years old.
- Counselor-to-camper ratio: 1 counselor per ~10 campers (teams of 10).
Schedule:
- Timeframe 3.5 weeks
- Week 1: Training (training begins Wednesday, July 29, 2026)

Provide individual instruction for varying ages to the campus community. Educate participants on proper technique and promote swimmer safety. Design individualized programs to meet the participant's interests, abilities and goals. Provide lesson plans as appropriate. Conduct swim tests as required. Peer Health Educator - Not Accepting applications
Duties:
- Assist with the development and/or implementation of strategies to advance the goals of the Peer Health Education program and RecWell.
- Engage in various program and departmental initiatives, outreach, and programming (e.g. assist with campus-wide events, connect with your peers in a variety of settings to support their wellbeing, visit classrooms/groups, co-create social media content, etc.).

Responsible for all Manager shifts including any openings, closings, weekends, etc. via rotation 10-20 hours a week of Manager Shifts/Duties. Develop personalized, safe and effective exercise programs for RecWell members of various fitness levels. Conduct consultations, fitness assessments, and provide safe and effective instruction on a variety of cardiovascular and resistance training equipment.
Qualifications: experience in developing comprehensive, customized exercise programs, knowledge of anatomy and physiology, knowledge of muscular endurance and strength training as well as cardiovascular training, flexibility, exercise selection, training intensity and duration, and good interpersonal skills. Recreation & Wellbeing hires students as sports officials, commonly referred to as "referees." Officials work with their peers to provide a welcoming, safe and enjoyable environment for intramural participants. Officials are encouraged to officiate multiple sports to gain knowledge and skills necessary for advancement.

Intramural Manager

Intramural managers are sports officials who demonstrate mastery of their craft and desire for self-improvement through experiential learning opportunities, both on and off campus. These individuals exhibit a strong commitment to the Intramural Sports program and the Campus Recreation community. They are responsible for assisting in training, evaluating and mentoring sports officials and making sure everyone has a safe, fair and fun environment while participating.

Program assistant is the highest student position within Intramural Sports. Program assistants train, schedule and manage sports officials in their assigned activities, coordinate and schedule sport activities and serve as extensions of the full-time staff. - Create Visual Content: Design graphics, posters, and digital materials for social media, campus displays, and print flyers that align with RecWell’s branding
- Capture Photo and Video Content: Film and photograph RecWell programs, fitness classes, intramural events, and special activities
- Video Production: Edit and assemble short-form videos for social media and longer highlight reels that showcase RecWell’s facilities, events, and community
- Social Media Management: Collaborate with the marketing team to develop creative content ideas, draft captions, schedule posts, and analyze engagement across platforms
- Website Maintenance: Assist in updating website content, event listings, and visuals to ensure RecWell’s site stays current, accessible, and engaging
- Brand Consistency: Uphold RecWell’s visual identity and voice across all marketing materials and communication channels.
- Collaborative Projects: Work closely with student staff, program coordinators, and professional staff to support marketing initiatives across all RecWell departments (Fitness, Aquatics, Intramurals, Adventure, Wellness etc.).
- Event Promotion: Support marketing efforts before, during, and after RecWell events including tabling, photography, live posting, and follow-up content creation
Market Research: Stay informed on current trends in social media, fitness, and campus marketing to bring fresh, innovative ideas to the team
Hourly Rate: $16
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, or Canva).
- Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills.
- Comfortable working in both creative and collaborative environments.
- Comfortable being on camera
- Interest in fitness, wellness, or campus recreation is a plus.
