Edna Bonsu '28, an Elaine Marieb College of Nursing junior, has been named a 2026 recipient of the New England Minority Nurse Leadership Collaborative (NEMNLC) annual scholarship, awarded to undergraduate and graduate students to promote educational advancement.
Bonsu is a Seedworks Scholar in the Seedworks Health Equity in Nursing Program and an honors student at the UMass Amherst Commonwealth Honors College. She was encouraged to apply by Lucinda Canty, associate professor and director of the Seedworks program.
Bonsu plans to pursue an advanced degree as a women's health nurse practitioner or as a midwife — a direction shaped by a high school capstone project on Black maternal mortality.
"I would strongly encourage anyone who is thinking about studying nursing to nurture that calling," Bonsu said in an earlier interview. "We need nurses from all walks of life who are passionate about caring for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives."
In the video below, Bonsu shares what the scholarship means to her and about the path she is building in nursing.
