Frequently Asked Questions: Four-Year B.S. in Nursing Progam
You ask, we answer! Don't see your question answered below? Reach out to our Student Support Team at nursing [at] UMass [dot] edu (nursing[at]UMass[dot]edu).
Can I switch my major to nursing if I'm a UMass student, or transfer into the program if I'm at a different school?
Answer: No.
We do not allow change-of-majors or transfers into our four-year B.S. in Nursing program; we admit directly from high school. There is no minor in nursing at UMass Amherst. Learn more about admission into our four-year B.S. in Nursing program.
For your consideration: We offer an accelerated B.S. in Nursing program for those who have earned a bachelor's degree in a non-nursing field.
What clinical placements does this program offer?
Answer: We boast over 100 longstanding clinical partnerships with regional healthcare providers and organizations. View a list of our frequently used clinical sites, including Baystate Medical Center, Holyoke Medical Center, and Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
I'm planning on taking a gap year after high school. Can I still apply?
Answer: Yes.
If you're planning on taking a gap year between high school and university, you may still apply for the following admissions cycle. You will need to submit a gap statement with your application.
For your consideration: if you take courses or enroll at another university or college elsewhere during your gap year, you will then be considered a transfer student and therefore ineligible for enrollment into our four-year B.S. in Nursing program.
Can I defer acceptance into this program?
Answer: It depends.
Deferment is assessed on a case-by-case basis and typically only granted for religious or health reasons. Please see the University's deferral policy for more information.
Is the SAT required? If so, what score do you recommend?
Answer: No, it is not required.
UMass Amherst is a test-optional university, so choosing not to submit your SAT scores will not negatively impact your application. For the nursing program, the typical SAT score is around 1440. If your score is below this, it may be advisable not to submit it, as the program is competitive.
