Clinical Placements

UMass Nursing students benefit from exceptional clinical learning experiences through placements in world-class hospitals, innovative community healthcare settings, and public health agencies. Throughout these experiences, faculty instructors provide guidance, mentorship, and support to help students develop the clinical skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for professional nursing practice.

During the final semester of the program, students complete a precepted clinical experience in which a designated preceptor from the hospital or agency serves as a hands-on mentor in an immersive practicum. Together, instructors and preceptors play a vital role in connecting classroom learning with clinical practice, helping students strengthen their competencies and transition successfully into their nursing careers.

Undergraduate nursing clinical placements are coordinated and assigned by nursing faculty and clinical placement staff rather than selected independently by students. While students may submit preferences for the senior internship precepted experience, final placement decisions are based on program accreditation requirements, clinical site availability, and course learning outcomes.

Additional information: 

• Community health agencies utilized in Hamden, Hampshire, Franklin, Berkshire, and Worcester counties based on faculty expertise.
• Internship opportunities exist throughout Massachusetts and occasionally in the following neighboring states, depending on faculty: Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
