Pamela Shea

Pamela A. Shea holds a B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature from The State University of New York at Oneonta, a M.A. in TESOL from the School for International Training's Graduate Institute, and a PhD in Teacher Education Curriculum Design with a focus on Language, Literacy and Culture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is a licensed TESOL Certificate Teacher Trainer through the School for International Training’s Graduate Institute, and has extensive experience living and working overseas. She was a faculty member at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea and was awarded two Senior English Language Fellowships through the U.S. Department of State to provide TESOL Teacher Training, English language program design and management in both Uzbekistan and Bolivia. In Bolivia, she established the first official teacher training center in a Bi-National Center, and upgraded the English programs in such centers. Her fellowship was extended beyond the usual one-year limit so that she could work on a national level.

Pamela was also the Director of World Language, a Grant Project Officer and a National Scholarship Advisor at Hampshire College. The position was funded through a Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant and was to promote language learning across the curriculum. At Hampshire College, she established and managed the World Language Enrichment and Acquisition Office where she supported translation studies, post-doctoral fellows, designed and implemented an Amazon exchange program and launched a sustainable revenue generating TESOL Certificate Summer program. She also worked with faculty to incorporate foreign language into their content areas and made Hampshire a top producer of Fulbright grants in 2014. Pamela has published articles on best practices in English language teaching and on blended learning in an intensive TESOL Certificate Course. She has been a keynote speaker and has presented at several conferences nationally and internationally.

Pamela conducted research in 2016-2017 on the experiences of Chinese, female, international students living in the United States. She is currently a full time Faculty member with the department of Language, Literatures and Culture in the College of Humanities at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  She is fluent in Spanish and proficient in Korean. Her teaching and research interests include TESOL Teacher Training, Training of Trainers, best practices in teaching ESL/EFL, research on the experiences of international students living in the United States, Systemic Functional Linguistics and Blended Learning using Teacher/Student-friendly Learning Management Systems.
