Questions about ESL Tutoring Services

Who can participate in tutoring services?

Any currently enrolled UMass Amherst student, both graduate and undergraduate, visiting scholar or international instructor who has learned English as an additional language.

What will the tutors help you with?

Any aspect of your Academic English. This includes speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, or vocabulary. If you need help with a certain assignment, just remember to bring in any papers or documents related to that assignment. Tutors can also help you review English language aspects of any assignment or exam that has previously been graded.

What will the tutors NOT help you with?

The tutors will not correct grammar mistakes in written work, nor will they complete any assignments for you.

How can you prepare for tutoring?

In order to prepare for tutoring, please bring in any assignments, task descriptions, or just a general idea of what you would like to work on with your tutor. For example, if you have difficulty following your professor’s lectures, come in and inform the tutor that you need help with listening to lectures. The tutor will teach you some techniques and provide you with practice activities to help you develop your skills.

Is it possible to make an appointment for tutoring? Is there a time limit for a tutoring session?

Appointments are not available, as this is a walk-in, "first-come, first-served" service, with set hours depending on tutor availability. If other individuals are waiting, each session will be limited to 30 minutes; otherwise, time limits are determined by the tutor’s schedule.

There is also the possibility that a tutor will not be available when you arrive. For example, if the tutor has two hours available and there are already 4 individuals waiting to see the tutor.

How frequently can use the tutoring services?

The tutoring service is a walk-in center. Come as frequently as you like, but realize that if there is a line, your time with the tutor will be limited to 30 minutes.
