Questions about ESL Tutoring Services

Who can participate in tutoring services?

Any currently enrolled UMass Amherst student (graduate, undergraduate and UWW), visiting scholar or international instructor who has learned English as an additional language.

What will the tutors help you with?

Any aspect of your Academic English. This includes speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, or vocabulary. If you need help with a certain assignment, just remember to bring in any papers or documents related to that assignment. Tutors can also help you review English language aspects of any assignment or exam that has previously been graded.

What will the tutors NOT help you with?

The tutors will not correct grammar mistakes in written work, nor will they complete any assignments for you.

How can you prepare for tutoring?

In order to prepare for tutoring, please bring in any assignments, task descriptions, or just a general idea of what you would like to work on with your tutor. For example, if you have difficulty following your professor’s lectures, come in and inform the tutor that you need help with listening to lectures. The tutor will teach you some techniques and provide you with practice activities to help you develop your skills.

Is it possible to make an appointment for tutoring? Is there a time limit for a tutoring session?

Yes, tutoring can only be accessed with an appointment and will take place via Zoom. You must sign up for your appointment with your UMass email address at least one day before the appointment time to ensure you will be seen. The tutor will send you a Zoom link to your UMass email address. If you sign up for a meeting using a different email address, your appointment will not be honored. Each meeting is scheduled in 30 minute time intervals.

How frequently can you use the tutoring services?

You can sign up for one tutoring session per week.
