Questions about ESL Tutoring Services
Who can participate in tutoring services?
Any currently enrolled UMass Amherst student (graduate, undergraduate and UWW/online), visiting scholar or international instructor who has learned English as an additional language.
Where does the tutoring take place?
When you make your appointment, you will be given a choice of online or face-to-face tutoring. The face-to-face tutoring will take place in Bartlett Hall, room 389. Information about the online meetings will be provided when you sign up.
What will the tutors help you with?
Any aspect of your Academic English. This includes speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, or vocabulary. If you need help with a certain assignment, just remember to bring in any papers or documents related to that assignment. Tutors can also help you review English language aspects of any assignment or exam that has previously been graded.
What will the tutors NOT help you with?
The tutors will not proofread entire papers, correct all grammar mistakes in written work, nor will they complete any assignments for you.
How can you prepare for tutoring?
In order to prepare for tutoring, please bring in any assignments, task descriptions, or just a general idea of what you would like to work on with your tutor. For example, if you have difficulty following your professor’s lectures, come in and inform the tutor that you need help with listening to lectures. The tutor will teach you some techniques and provide you with practice activities to help you develop your skills.
Is it possible to make an appointment for tutoring? Is there a time limit for a tutoring session?
Yes, tutoring can only be accessed with an appointment and will take place either in person (Bartlett Room 389) or online. You must sign up for your appointment by clicking the link above, registering and selecting an appointment date/time. Please sign up at least one day before the appointment time to ensure you will be seen. Each meeting is scheduled in 30 minute time intervals.
How frequently can you use the tutoring services?
Currently, there is no limit on the 30 minute appointments.
What happens if I cannot make it to my appointment?
If you cannot make it to your appointment for some reason, you need to cancel by midnight the night before your appointment. If you do not cancel before midnight the night before, you will be marked as a "no-show." After two no-shows", you will be blocked from signing up for further appointments. If you have a last minute cancellation, email your tutor to let them know and they will not mark you as a "no-show" in the system.
