Mix Mann

Dr. Mix Mann (they/them/theirs) is an Assistant Professor in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies. Mix Mann’s research interests are rooted in a commitment to the study of Black intimate life in its multivalent forms, and much of their scholarship lies at the intersection of race, gender, family, and sexuality in the 19th and 20th century United States.

They are currently working on their first book manuscript, tentatively titled She Feels Like Home: Black Women and Queer Domesticity, 1859-1970, which explores how Black women’s domestic arrangements and domestic desires can be analyzed to understand their same-sex intimate relationships. Through this project, Professor Mann centers Black women’s queer homemaking practices and places them squarely in the history of Black family life after Emancipation.

Mann earned their Ph.D. and M.A. in History at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and received their B.A. in Africana Studies from the University of Notre Dame. Their research has been generously funded by numerous organizations such as the Institute for the Humanities and the LGBTQ+ History Association.
