Welcome to the K-12 African American Studies Initiatives organized by faculty members in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and the Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies in the College of Education at UMass Amherst!

The project team includes Associate Professor Toussaint Losier, Professor A. Yemisi Jimoh, and Professor Yolanda Covington-Ward (all in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies) and Associate Professor Keisha Green (in the College of Education)

Our team hosted two workshops for local teachers on November 4, 2023 and March 2, 2024 at UMass Amherst.  In summer, 2025, the project team, along with other colleagues in Black/Africana/Afro-American Studies across the Five Colleges and other institutions, will be leading a new NEH funded K-12 Teacher's Institute.


NEH Teacher's Institute: The Souls of Black Folk and the Foundations of African American Studies

Dates: June 22 - July 3, 2025

Institute Description:

The Souls of Black Folk and the Foundations of African American Studies is a two-week residential institute from June 22-July 3, 2025 for 25 high school teachers. It is designed to support teachers of grades 9-12 with an expressed interest in preparing to offer the new Advanced Placement African American Studies course or expanding their content knowledge and pedagogy in African American Studies through workshops. 

The institute is organized by distinguished faculty in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and the Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies in the College of Education.

 

Participants will receive a taxable stipend of $2,200

Applications to participate in the Soul of Black Folk Institute are due by March 5, 2025.
