Matthew Mendez is the kind of nurse who thrives in motion. Active, curious, and drawn to challenge, he chose nursing because it allows him to think critically, act quickly, and make a real impact. With interests in emergency medicine and pediatrics, he’s building a future where no day is the same— and every moment matters.

“I’ve always been an active person. I think best when I’m moving — and nursing gives me that balance of urgency, critical thinking, and care," he says.

For Mendez, nursing is the perfect combination of high energy and human connection.
Though still deciding, he’s especially interested in the emergency room, pediatrics, or a combination of both— where adaptability is key and no two shifts are the same.

The opportunity to study at a top-tier school was made real through the Seedworks scholarship, which gave him the financial security to commit fully. With funding locked in for all four years, he’s able to plan ahead and focus on excelling— without the weight of financial uncertainty. UMass stood out for its strong reputation, Mendez says, adding that the Seedworks Scholarship made it possible to attend.
