Emily Loan '25 is preparing to run the Boston Marathon next week. Her path to the starting line began with an unexpected setback: her junior year of college, Loan suffered a stress fracture in her hip.

"Coming back from my injury taught me a lot about myself and what I really wanted. Running this marathon is kind of a celebration of all the things that I once couldn't do," she said. Loan will be running for Tufts Medical Center, where she said she received nothing but encouragement and support from her care team there. "It's a perfect way to give back," she said. Loan says the experience of being a patient herself while training as a nurse reshaped her approach to care and her journey to the 2026 Boston Marathon.

"Fracturing my hip was not really something that I anticipated on happening. I needed help getting up. I couldn't really do stuff myself," she said. "It made me realize how important it is to look at the person as a whole and for who they are, rather than just their diagnosis."

Learn more about how study abroad and being a patient while in nursing school influences the care Loan now provides as a working registered nurse at Beth Israel Hospital in this two-minute interview.
