This course provides an overview of SUD and introductory frameworks for recognizing and managing the care of a person with substance use disorder. It will focus on decreasing stigma, harm reduction education, recovery-focused language, and caring for the individual across the addiction trajectory. Ethics and legal issues about caring for those in active substance use will be explored.

#N490B/690B: Prevention and Risk Assessment of Substance Use Disorder (3 credits) | This course identifies protective and risk factors for SUD and other related health impacts, including socio-cultural impacts among diverse populations. It will teach approaches to early intervention using screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment, trauma-informed care principles, and motivational interviewing. The role of social determinants of health, co-existing mental health disorders, and societal support will be explored. | Successful completion of a psychology course (undergraduate or graduate) or by permission of the instructor. |
#N490C/690C: Management of the Person with Substance Use Disorder (3 credits) | This course provides an overview of the role of the nurse and the advanced practice nurse in assessing, diagnosing, treating, and providing continuum care to people with substance use disorders. The course will focus on tools and techniques for gathering a medical and substance use history, managing withdrawal symptoms, treating co-occurring disorders, and treating options from a holistic patient-centered approach. Completion of this course fulfills the Healthcare Provider DEA Registration training requirement to prescribe buprenorphine. | Successful completion of a psychology course (undergraduate or graduate) or by permission of the instructor. |
#N690D: Drug Policy and Socially Just Care (1-credit) | This course is designed to assist in developing licensed nurses to be expert clinicians, advocates, and leaders in addiction care through transdisciplinary collaboration focused on socially just, person-centered care. The course will explore current policies and topics related to addiction across the lifespan from a national and international lens to address social determinants of health and the intended application of learned content to clinical practice. This course will include 15 hours of student-selected observation in a community setting pertaining to addiction. This self-selected observation experience(s) will allow the student to further explore an area of interest to enhance their clinical practice. | N690A, N690B, N690C. Co-requisites: Licensed Registered Nurse or Advance Practice Nurse. |
- Admission requirements: At this time, you must be a licensed nurse or APRN to obtain this certificate.
- Pricing: Graduate classes are priced at $825/credit. UG classes are priced at $695/credit. Pricing is the same for in-state and out-of-state students.
- The first three courses can be taken as stand-alone courses or sequentially.
- To take the 1-credit Drug Policy and Socially Just Care course, the other three courses must be taken first.
- Anyone can take a class (the 400 or 600 level), the only pre-requisite being you must have taken a psychology course. This pre-requisite may also be waived by the instructor (for example, if you work in a human service setting).
