Jennifer Herndon

Dr. Jennifer Herndon, DVM and Assistant Professor, has been teaching Veterinary Technology at Mount Ida College since 2011. She began her educational career as an adjunct faculty member in the department and became full-time in the fall of 2014.

A love of animals and science has guided Herndon’s career path. Her experiences before veterinary school included research work in both the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. After reaching her goal of becoming a DVM in 1995, Herndon practiced small animal medicine for several years before taking a short break to raise her children. Before coming to Mount Ida College, Herndon spent many years as a veterinary surgeon in the biotech industry. Her lifelong hobby as an equestrian and horse owner has allowed her to develop a strong knowledge of the equine industry.

“I enjoy using all my experiences to help students understand the relationships between the sometimes daunting course material and its relevance in their chosen field." Straying from the required course curriculum can help students learn about anatomy and physiology. She adds, “I often find examples of disease processes to help students understand the relationships between form, function, and the changes that take place when disease occurs.”

Dr. Herndon says she finds it an exciting time in the industry: “With so many new health technologies available for animals and their owners, as well as ongoing and new areas of research in both human and animal medicine, there is a wide variety of career path options for veterinary technicians today. ”

She extols her students to make the most of their education, ask questions and get lots of experience working with different species of animals in a variety of fields.

She is a member of the American Veterinary Medicine Association and the Massachusetts Veterinary Medicine Association.

Dr. Herndon has taught Mammalian Anatomy and Physiology and is currently teaching Veterinary Pharmacology and Large Animal Medicine and Management.
