Content
Meet Hyunwoo Do, who is pursuing a masters’ in Public Health and Epidemiology.
Hyunwoo spent his summer interning at Boston Children's Hospital in their Biostatistics and Research Design Center, where he worked on a research project centered around Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, a form of bone marrow failure. As a biostatistics intern, he conducted data analysis, queries, and data cleaning, applying skills he learned in his coursework to real-world problems.
While a research setting was a bit outside his comfort zone, Hyunwoo seized the opportunity to grow and learn. With guidance from his mentor, Dr. Edie Weller, he overcame hurdles. “They don't expect you to know everything,” Hyunwoo said, emphasizing the learning-focused culture.
Hyunwoo was pleasantly surprised by the welcoming and supportive atmosphere at Boston Children’s. Collaborating with a cohort of other interns, he felt embraced despite joining a bit later in the summer than most. Daily meetings with his mentor allowed for check-ins and clarifications.
Living on the Mount Ida Campus had a positive impact on his experience. The financial feasibility and proximity to Boston allowed him to fully engage in his internship.
Outside of work, Hyunwoo cherished exploring Boston and revisiting the city through a new lens. Unforgettable moments like steering one of Boston’s famous Duck Boats contributed to his memorable summer.
Hyunwoo's advice for future interns living at Mount Ida is to make the most of the location, embrace the access to Boston, and take advantage of Mount Ida’s networking opportunities to maximize your experience.
Here's to a summer well spent and a promising future career, Hyunwoo!
