An undergraduate minor in biology requires successful completion of at least 18 credits from the biological sciences core, all with a grade of 'C' or better:
I. BIOL 151, 152, and 153 Introductory Biology;
II. Three additional biology department courses chosen from the list of approved courses** for the major, subject to the following stipulations.
i. Each of the three courses must be from a different subject area;
ii. No more than one of the three courses may also be used to satisfy the requirements of another major;
iii. Only 3-credit and 4-credit courses may be used;
iv. Only Biology Department courses may be used (EXCEPT for Biochem or AnimSci 285, Biochem or AnimSci 311);
v. All three courses must be taken at UMass Amherst.
**Note that most courses on the list of courses approved for the major are restricted to biology majors (mainly courses numbered 315 or higher). These courses are not available to students pursuing a minor. Also note that although the list includes some courses from departments other than biology, only biology department courses can count toward the minor (except for Biochem or AnimSci 285, Biochem or AnimSci 311).
